Static Attraction: A Hidden Threat to Life Science Manufacturing Cleanliness

Particle contamination due to static attraction is a leading cause of significant yield losses in medical device manufacturing. This challenge impacts a broad spectrum of devices, such as catheters, stents, optical lenses, IVs, syringes, hip and knee replacements, pacemakers, blood filters, vials, breast implants, and other implantable devices. Virtually all plastic or insulative medical devices are vulnerable to this type of contamination.

Static charges can form when two different materials slide against each other and then separate. Upon separation, one material gains a positive charge while the other acquires a negative charge. This opposite charging results in a mutual attraction, commonly known as “static cling.” Conductive materials, such as metals, can be grounded to safely discharge their static electricity. However, insulative materials like plastics, glass, and ceramics—due to their non-conductive nature—cannot be grounded to eliminate their charge. In these insulators, the static charge lingers on the surface and can only be neutralized by applying an opposite charge through ionization in the air.

Watch the video demonstration below with Stephen Carfaro, a static mitigation expert with over 37 years of experience and the President of C.C. Steven & Associates Inc. In this demonstration, he illustrates the way that static attraction causes particle attraction and shares his expertise and insights into the innovative solutions that have established us as leaders in the industry.
